How to get stuff done – do less!
Have you got a ton of stuff on your ‘to do’ list you must get done and now!?
Have you no idea which to prioritise as it’s ALL important?
Does the thought of walking away from your list and relaxing for 10 minutes fill you with horror!? “I don’t have time for that!” “How the hell is relaxing going to help me get stuff done?” I hear you cry…
Well, I can tell you how to get stuff done – do less!
Are you scared to stop ‘doing’ ? To relax? Does the thought of stopping working through your ‘to do’ list fill you with fear? In fear of losing what little control you have?
If you stopped for a few minutes, do you think something ‘bad’ would happen? What kind of bad? Your world will fall apart? You’ll lose your job? Your family? Friends? Really?? Is that really going to happen?
Have you become to believe that by constantly ‘doing’, by being ‘busy’, you’re achieving something and therefore progressing in life?
Have you become addicted to simply ‘doing’ and not actually ‘being’?
The irony is that by stopping the ‘doing’ and increasing the ‘being’ by relaxing, you actually become better at what you’re achieving – relaxing improves performance.
Of course we all have stuff in life we have to get done; work, pay the bills, but the direction we take in our work can be dictated to by what we think we should be doing and not what we truly want…be that by pressure for our peers , family, society….
When you relax, your mind quietens down and you can tap into your intuition; begin to listen to your inner self, tap into your true potential; realise what things on your ‘to do’ list are of most importance to you, to your life. Basically, you become more self aware.
So how can I Relax?
Slumping in front of the Netflix after a hard day seems such a blissful way to relax but really you’re not truly relaxing. You’re numbing yourself, running away from the day to day things that have overwhelmed you and stressed you out.
True relaxing is being in a state of connection with yourself – remember on that holiday after a few days of winding down, lying on that sunbed you realising that you felt content just being there? Or at the end of that yoga class in savasana you had a sudden flash of inspiration? Or whilst appreciating the beauty around you on a walk through nature one Sunday, you suddenly came up with a solution to a problem bugging you for ages?
By giving your mind the space to quieten down and allowing your inner voice to be heard, we can achieve more and from a space of authenticity.
Research shows that when we relax, symptoms of stress reduce and our feeling of general well-being increases. Even our bodies heal faster.
As well as the mental benefits, relaxing gives our physical selves the time to repair and rejuvenate. Regular relaxing will increase your health, energy and productivity.
So how to get stuff done? Learn how to relax…
You could try a slow yoga practice such as Restorative or Yin to kick in your parasympathetic (rest and digest) nervous system and aid relaxation.
Or go for a gentle walk somewhere in nature – your local park if you can’t get out into the countryside.
Or try simply sitting or lying on your bed or sofa for 10 minutes a day and with your eyes closed, follow the movement of your breath. If you fall asleep it means you probably need to catch up on some sleep! No bad thing as sleep is essential to relaxation and heightens your ability to get stuff done.
So, how often do you truly relax? How often are you simply in the state of ‘doing’ instead of ‘being’?
You are called a human being after all 🙂
Why not add a new thing to your to do list; to find a sense of relaxation and connection every day…
Relaxation = connection
Connection = achieving – what you truly desire
I’d love to hear what you do to relax. Let me know below!
